Feel Like James Bond with the Front View Screen

When handling a fighter jet, every fraction of a second matter. At a speed of thousands of kilometers per hour, looking away can be risky. In a car this is not so dramatic, however, showing to the driver the most important parameters of the vehicle at the dashboard considerably increases safety and comfort.

While this modern and sporty gadget was originally developed for young and dynamic drivers, it can also be of great use to older drivers who need progressive glasses for clear vision, becoming one of the automotive industry trends. After all, “head up” means “head high.” Therefore, the driver never has to take his eyes off the road to be aware of the most important driving parameters.

Inexpensive but limited to use the mobile application

Although it is possible to transform the mobile phone into a front view screen, simply downloading the corresponding application is not enough. After all, the great attraction of this device is that the screen is transparent.

Therefore, having a mobile phone insight is not the most appropriate solution. For this, the store offers smartphone holders with a horizontal position and a semi-transparent reflective film for the front viewing screen. However, the brightness of the screen is not enough, at least during daytime driving, to be really useful.

Also, a constantly vibrating head-up display that doesn’t stick well often does the opposite of what is expected from a HUD. Fortunately, there are already using devices that cost just slightly more than these unusable smartphone mounts for just under $20.

Futuristic front view screens

Head up display semi-pro devices are available starting from around $30. All these solutions have one thing in common: they have a fixed screen. This type of device offers clear and unambiguous signals with good legibility. The range of display possibilities is quite large. The simplest HUDs only show speed. Depending on the type, however, they do so in large, easily readable numbers. Those who are satisfied with this limited information will be happy with these devices.

However, it is now standard on many types of HUD to signal speed warnings. If the driver exceeds the permitted speed at a certain point, he is informed of the correct maximum speed. But the range of possible information goes even further: the odometer, the fuel consumption display, and the rudimentary navigation are also available on the high-quality HUDs.

As an example, one of the leading companies in the HUD market called Eye-Lights has gone so far that it is not only creating huds for cars but also for motorcycles. 

How does the information get to HUD?

Information reaches HUD devices through three paths.

  1. The simplest HUD application is generally the GPS. This technology is already surprisingly accurate today.
  2. The second possibility is a wired connection to OBD. Although this plug is intended to read error memory, inventors, and engineers are able to make this service connection and a versatile data source. In this sense, OBD signals have proven to be optimal for HUD displays. An advantage of the wired connection is that the appliance has a constant supply of electricity.
  3. However, not everyone likes to have a cable pulled by the car. That is why there are also front display screens with Bluetooth reception. All that is needed is a transmitter plug, which is also coupled to the OBD.
